a foreign body
A cycle of interdisciplinary artworks
2022-2023
Statement
'A Foreign Body' is a series of interdisciplinary artistic works dedicated to themes of alienation, homelessness, and estrangement. The notion of the foreign body is taken from medicine and means "something that is stuck inside you but isn't supposed to be there". By analogy with this definition, I consider the human individual as something foreign, alien to their social, cultural or economic environment. My interest in these concepts stems from my personal experience of constantly relocating. My childhood was marked by frequent moves to different towns across Russia, and later in life, I moved to France during my college years. I have had the privilege to live and work in various countries, including Belgium, France, Spain, Russia, and Croatia. While currently residing in Croatia since April 2022, I remain a non-citizen and do not possess any properties or familial connections within the country. As such, I often ponder whether I can genuinely consider Croatia my home or if I remain a mere guest in the country. This leads me to question my roots and where I can truly call home. Due to the recent political and economic commotions, many individuals were relocated, some voluntarily and others by force, and my research, initially motivated by the purely personal case, was supplemented by collective experience. Upon engaging in discussions with my social circle and individuals I recently encountered, I came to recognize a shared sentiment prevalent among all of us. It pertained to the absence of command over circumstances, ambiguity regarding the future, loneliness, and the need to rediscover ways of functioning in a community.
To effectively convey these ideas in my works, I approach them through the lens of landscape politics. In my pieces, the protagonists interact with their environment to establish their position in the world. Using diverse film techniques to depict landscapes, I aim to capture the subtle emotions of individuals and emphasize their vulnerability.

BONEFIRE
OR HUMAN BODY AT REST ABSORBING LIGHT

1-channel video installation on sand and objects, 6'20'' loop, 1920x1080, 2023

What does it mean to be a stranger? A stranger is a passive observer, the one who is not allowed to take action due to political, linguistic, religious or cultural restrictions. Without the opportunity to be an actor, the stranger becomes a prop. Their only way to belong is to merge with the environment, to dissolve into it. This work talks about the individual’s relationship with society and the environment. My stranger is a sunbathing person whose skin absorbs the light until it burns them to ashes.

The installation displays two levels of materiality interpreted through the politics of landscapes. The first level is the person as a landscape, the relations between humans and nature. The ribs of the protagonist are designed in the form of a bonfire, her spine is composed of pebbles, and her legs and arms are flammable wooden sticks. This refers to the organic roots of a human and raises philosophical questions about what we become after death and what we leave behind. The viewers are supposed to gather around the artwork as they would around someone’s grave. The second level involves the usage of elements from the landscape as sculptural elements of the work. The sand used for the installation was taken from the Adriatic shore, and other objects were found during walks in Marjan Park and Bacvice Beach. In this way, parts of the city’s body are physically present as parts of the protagonist’s (and therefore the artist’s) body.

PLANNING HORIZONS
1-channel video installation, 6'08'' loop, 3936x3936, 2023

Due to the political situation in February 2022, many Russians and Ukrainians have left their respective countries and started their lives from scratch in other parts of the world. My friend and I are no exception. I moved to Croatia, while my friend relocated to Spain. Recently, I spoke to her and asked about her plans for the future. Her response struck me profoundly. She said: "Honestly, I don't know. My planning horizon is only one week." This phrase resonated with me because it highlights the current state of uncertainty in the world. We are unable to make plans for years or even months ahead because we cannot predict what might happen tomorrow.
These thoughts inspired me to create an animation installation that depicts our universe as a 3-dimensional coordinate system, with a person represented by a single point. Unlike stable coordinate systems, this one rotates around the protagonist, leaving them feeling disoriented and fearful.

In Due Course In Your House

Experimental short film, 07'22'', 2023

In Due Course In Your House is an atmospheric audiovisual poem, a parable of finding a home. The protagonists are two birds who fell from the sky and turned into people. Lost in the new world, they try to find their homeland, a place to give birth and die.
This film is created in response to the instability of the world shaken by wars, diseases, and natural disasters. These changes occur faster than we can adapt to them. They produce a disorienting effect and make us requestion our roots and our destination. In Due Course in Your House is a story of migration, which the author comprehends not only as movement from one country to another, but also as an inner resettlement, a relocation of thoughts and ideas.
The film was edited from the director's archival materials filmed in Croatia, Russia and Spain in different time periods.

A Closer Look

Video art, 07'48'', 2023

If 'In Due Course In Your House' explores memories, 'A Closer Look' is about the present moment. In this film, I delve into my relationship with the city of Split, where I have been living for some time, but cannot call it my home. This work is different from the previous one in many ways. Instead of wide shots, we get to see close-ups and the detached voice-over is replaced with my voice. Furthermore, instead of generalized landscapes from memories and archives, we see specific locations in Split. The approach to the landscape in this film is very intimate and tactile. I try to touch the city's skin, to get familiar with it, and to be loved by it. I do not send fictional characters to explore this world for me; I do it myself, honestly and openly. That's why you won't see any effects, stylizations, or overlays. "A Closer Look" is an anatomical map of the city's body.
