Dear commission,
I am a visual artist currently exploring the medium of experimental animation. With this cover letter, I am applying for the Film, Media Art and Animation degree, module Animation.
I have been doing visual arts since the 2010s, but I have not received any formal education in this field. My artistic practice has been in the shadow of other activities. In particular, I tried to build a career as a cultural manager, but it didn't make me truly happy, while art did. Two years ago, I decided to take a chance and make art my main occupation. Since then, I have created two short experimental films, contributed to the production of a video game, participated in several exhibitions and festivals, and taken the first prize in a contest in experimental animation. These achievements make me believe I am on the right path and motivate me to go further.
As the next career step, I want to take my art to the level of renowned festivals and monetize it. At this stage, I feel the need for an appropriate professional education.
Since I want to live and work in Croatia, I considered universities exclusively in this country. I was looking for an interdisciplinary program available in English, and guided by renowned artists. After comparing several curriculums, I concluded that MA in Film, Media art and Animation corresponds the best to my criteria.
This Master’s degree would boost my professional growth on several levels. Firstly, on the level of artistic performance. I expect that this program will help me to improve the aesthetic quality of my works, and make them more valuable and professional while maintaining my author authenticity. I hope that the professors will point out my mistakes, help me understand what needs to be improved, and assist me to find the most appropriate artistic solutions to implement my ideas. Secondly, on the level of technical performance. I wish to master more technological tools, both digital and analog, to create more diverse artworks responding to contemporary standards and trends. And finally, on the level of networking. I expect that during my studies I will meet like-minded people to collaborate with, as well as audiovisual institutions interested in the promotion and dissemination of my works.
I wanted to enroll in this program last year, but I could not attend the entrance exams for several reasons. This year I decided to come at any cost. I came to Croatia in April as a volunteer, because it was the only way to receive a visa. For two months I lived in a small eco-village in Latinovac, Slavonia, where I learned how to lead a sustainable lifestyle. During a one-week vacation, I managed to find a job in Pula where I worked at the reception of one resort for the next four months to be able to pay for my upcoming studies. In the meanwhile, I resolved numerous issues regarding my residency permit, insurance, flat rental, and documents for the university, without knowledge of the Croatian language and laws. I haven’t seen my family for half a year already, and I won’t see them until the New Year at least. Despite all these complications, I am here, and if it doesn’t show my motivation, then I don’t know what motivation is.
I hope that all of the above shows my interest in the profession, my determination, and my ability to learn. Looking forward to talk to you in person,
Best regards,
Polina
